How do you talk to yourself when you feel stressed?
Your very own words can escalate the tension, sending more stress chemicals coursing madly through your veins. Or they can soothe your system and diminish the stress response instead.
Take a moment to consider what you usually tell yourself when stress arises. It could be eye-opening.
For example:
Do you keep telling yourself how stressful it is?
Do you paint a doomsday scenario?
Do you declare that it’s all too much?
Do you announce you can’t handle it?
Do you spurt out that you'll never get the task done?
Those types of statements might come automatically because we're just human. In fact, they’re based on my own tendencies. But I know from my own experience they're likely to compound stress instead of relieve it. Have you also noticed that?
