A Light-Hearted Way to Live with Life’s Big Questions
Finding comfort in tiny pleasures and present-moment peace

Aloha Lovelies,
This week, I’m re-sharing a 2022 e-letter on light-hearted living. This will allow me to take a small summer break and more time for developing my next e-letter on healthy aggression, which I’ll send out in two weeks.
Earlier this month, a friend from my distant past passed away. When I learned of this a few days ago, I wondered:
“Why do we make such a struggle of life when we all eventually pass away? How can I live with a lighter heart?”
We all have things we can worry about if we decide to go there.
What will happen to my cats when I die? Will I get Alzheimer’s like my brother did? Who will take care of me when I’m old and no longer function well?
I’m sure you have your list of current and future worries. Life can throw a lot our way. In challenging moments, the future can seem like an abyss of despair. Worrisome thoughts naturally arise for all—we’re just human, after all.
But please, decide to resist.
I’m not perfect at setting a boundary with my own mind, but I try not to spend too much time with bothersome thoughts. They tempt me, but what’s the point? I can only prepare for the unknown as best I can. Isn’t it better to do that and then let go?
The state of the world offers endless causes for concern. You could easily become entrapped if you don’t consciously say no.
I’m choosing a more light-hearted and pleasurable approach to this thing called life. Maybe you’d like to, too.
For me, the answer lies in mindfulness.
I love the idea of mindfully sprinkling tiny pleasures throughout my day. They can change the quality of your experience, evoking more of the joy and delight you rightfully deserve.
Here are a few I’ve shared in an earlier piece:
“Savor your morning coffee or tea, drinking in the aroma and the taste. Feel the warmth of the cup in your hand.
Feel the sensation of heat as the shower streams onto your skin.
Rub an object in your palm, feeling the stimulation of pressure points.
Feel the warmth of the sun on your body.
Visit your flowers and plants. Notice and celebrate how they’ve grown.
Gaze at the stars and appreciate the mystery of life.
Listen to the sounds of nature: Bird songs, pounding waves, or the rush of the winds through the trees.
Appreciate the colorful display of a meal. Breathe in the aromas.
Feel nourished by silence.
Watch families enjoying themselves when you’re at a park.
Play with your dog or pet your cat.
Hold your hand on your heart and speak kindly to yourself.”
If you drink your coffee mindlessly, it won’t bring any pleasure at all. You must awaken your senses and bring your full attention to any experience to make it pleasurable.
Researchers suggest that healthy pleasures in moderation can also help alleviate stress. They release brain chemicals, such as endorphins, that make everything seem more magical.
I’m not saying you should ignore your troubles. But difficulties need to be counterbalanced by pleasurable experiences so you don’t fall into discouragement, depression, or despair.
Pick a tiny pleasure and get started today. I will too! See the whole list of 21 tiny pleasures right here.
I would love to hear your thoughts!

Until Next Time
This past week, I’ve dabbled in a mid-year declutter to lighten myself mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
That included reassessing my 2025 goals, which has meant looking deeply into my heart and honestly into my capacity.
Now I need to cultivate the courage to honor myself and the changes that will best support my health and happiness. But for now, I’ll just focus on bringing more tiny pleasures into my day.
Until next time, stay safe, be happy, and let your love flow. Sending you all my love and best wishes.

Sandra, thanks for resharing something that I haven't read yet :)
Your article beautifully highlights the power of "mindfully sprinkling tiny pleasures."
It got me thinking about how we're often conditioned to seek grand, life-altering experiences for happiness, overlooking the subtle, ever-present opportunities for joy. It's like searching for a hidden treasure chest when there are glittering coins scattered all around us. This isn't about settling for less, but about cultivating a heightened sense of awareness, a deliberate practice of noticing.
Just yesterday, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed, but then I stepped outside and really saw the intricate pattern of sunlight filtering through the leaves of a tree – a small, fleeting masterpiece created by nature. It was a tiny moment, but it shifted my perspective and reminded me of the quiet beauty that persists even amidst internal chaos.
I DO ALL THESE AND IT WAS LOVELY TO FIND ANOTHER PERSON WHO HAS FOUND THE JOY IN SIMPLE PLEASURES.
