Hello Lovelies,
Going through my journals and finding the “abundance list” I shared last time, made me remember another uplifting exercise from the same time period.
I scoured all my journals to find it for you. I didn’t spend hours since I only have three or four. I let go of all my earlier journals five years ago. I could see the writing in my mind’s eye, but I still couldn’t find the entry.
I moved on to searching my digital files. I had done a radical file clean up earlier this year. So I wondered, “Did I dump that file in the trash?” But eventually I found it. I had labeled it: “Positive Qualities.”
The exercise is simple. Ask five or more of your friends or family members (if you’re close to them) to make a list of your positive qualities.
This is a wonderful exercise.
It’s especially helpful for anyone with low self-esteem.
But it’s also a great exercise for most of us. With the exception of ego-maniacs, we can all use a boost from time to time. It’s also fascinating to see sides of yourself that you may not notice at all.
Here are a few of the beautiful responses I received:
A bright light
Fearlessly compassionate
Flowing
Clarity in thinking and writing
You hear what isn’t being said
Has concern for the well-being of others
Strong in the face of challenges
Fluid in your emotions
I’m not sharing those to brag or seem special. I just want you to know that people will say beautiful things about you too.
You might feel a slight discomfort asking, I understand. But all my friends found it a joyful ways to express their appreciation for me. They didn’t mind a bit.
I sent my request by email and kept it very simple. That avoids putting someone on the spot in person. It also gives them time to reflect so they can think a little more deeply. But you could ask in person if that feels comfortable to you.
I received the responses by email too so I also didn’t feel on the spot while I processed the abundance of goodness.
Of course, you can make a list of your positive qualities yourself. That’s always a good thing to do.
But this is even better! It adds new dimensions to your portrait of yourself.
Now that I’ve found the digital file, I’m going to rewrite the qualities on a large card that I can use as an insert in my current journal. I want to keep these appreciations close instead of letting them getting lost in the machine again.
If you do the exercise, I would love to hear about your experience. Please leave a comment. And of course, I love to hear from you whether you do the exercise or not.
