Aloha Lovelies,
Earlier this month, an old-friend from the distant past passed from this world. When I learned of this a few days ago, I wondered: “Why do we make such a struggle of life when we all just pass anyway? How can I live with a lighter heart?”
We all have things we can worry about if we decide to go there.
What will happen to my cats when I die? Will I get Alzheimer’s like my brother did? Who will take care of me when I’m really old?
I’m sure you have your own list. Life can be very hard at times. In challenging moments, the future can seem like an abyss.
Worrisome thoughts will naturally arise from time to time. We’re just human, after all.
But please, decide to resist.
I’m not perfect at this, but I try not to spend too much time with bothersome thoughts. They tempt me, but what’s the point? I can only prepare for the unknown as best I can. Isn’t it better to do that and then let go?
The state of the world offers endless causes for concern. You could easily become entrapped if you don’t consciously say no.
Instead, choose a more light-hearted and pleasurable approach to this thing called life.
For me, the answer lies in present moment awareness.
I love the idea of tiny pleasures that can be sprinkled throughout any given day. They can absolutely change the quality of your experience, evoking more of the delight you rightfully deserve.
Here are a few I’ve shared in an earlier piece:
“Savor your morning coffee or tea, drinking in the aroma and the taste. Feel the warmth of the cup in your hand.
Feel the sensation of heat as the shower streams onto your skin.
Rub an object in your palm, feeling the stimulation of pressure points.
Feel the warmth of the sun on your body.
Visit your flowers and plants. Notice and celebrate how they’ve grown.
Gaze at the stars and appreciate the mystery of life.
Listen to the sounds of nature: Bird songs, pounding waves, or the rush of the winds through the trees.
Appreciate the colorful display of a meal. Breathe in the aromas.
Feel nourished by silence.
Watch families enjoying themselves when you’re at a park.
Play with your dog or pet your cat.
Hold your hand on your heart and speak kindly to yourself.”
If you drink your coffee mindlessly, it won’t bring any pleasure at all.
You must awaken your senses and bring your full attention to any experience to make it pleasurable.
Researchers say healthy pleasures in appropriate doses can waylay stress too. They release brain chemicals like endorphins that make everything more magical.
I’m not saying you should ignore any troubles that come. But difficulties need to be counterbalanced so you don’t fall into discouragement, depression, or despair.
Pick a tiny pleasure and get started today. I will too! See the whole list of 21 tiny pleasures right here.
I would love to hear your thoughts! Please share…
