I’m definitely an HSP and also an empath, although with years of therapy and a little of self-awareness practice I am better at protecting myself from other people’s feelings and pain.
Thanks for the affirmations. Learning I deserve to have my needs met has been a game changer for me.
Beth, Thanks for sharing your experience as an HSP and empath. It's encouraging to know that you have become better at protecting yourself from other people's feelings and pain. It shows us that we can do the same. Thanks for your reply!
This is such a great, well written, full article on being highly sensitive and an empath! My goodness I wish I found this ages ago… I’m slowly making my way through Dr Aron’s workbook, and exploring myself as a highly sensitive and empathic parent, friend, coach… my family is all highly sensitive (partner and kids… and dog). It’s such a great reflection in reading your work to see what I’ve learned and what else to explore.
I love the affirmations - and will explore those next.
Sara, Thank you so much! How amazing that your entire family is highly sensitive. How nice to be able to support one another, although I'm sure there are challenges as well. I wish you the very best on your journey of self-discovery!
Eden, I'm thrilled you want to try these affirmations. Wishing you the best getting to know your HSP identity. Thanks for taking a moment to connect. I appreciate it!
Thanks for this. I've known about my HSP traits since my 30s, then reading Judith Orloff's Empath studies took my understanding to another level.
I was really interested when you mentioned level 1 autism here "Be aware that many Highly Sensitive People may be undiagnosed level-one Autistics." I can definitely see it and have suspected that was the case but never really looked into it. Wouldn't mind finding out more about that link.
Mili, Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your HSP journey. I also appreciated how Orloff's book deepened my understanding and helped me care for myself better. If you're curious to find out more about level one Autism, there are many videos on YouTube from people in the Autism community that I have found helpful. Wishing you the best!
Larry, I'm so glad! I see your point about self-cheerleading. We don't have to become egomaniacs! But a little gentle self-encouragement can go a long way.
Loved this, Sandra. Thank you for sharing. I'm also highly sensitive, and since becoming sober it has been a huge learning curve to embrace my sensitivities rather than trying to numb them. These affirmations are a lovely gift.
I am on the same journey. I wish you well and know that sobriety is a powerful step in the right direction to healing and accepting our sensitive natures.
Kaitlyn, It seems like all the writers I love are highly sensitive! Thanks for sharing how it has been to embrace your sensitivities since becoming sober. I'm glad these affirmations resonate and of course, the main credit goes to Judith Orloff.
Loving these affirmations! I am also a highly sensitive person, and I think I get more sensitive the older I get. Hearing that sensitive people experience greater emotional ups and downs in response to experiences was so affirming. I spend a lot of time processing my thoughts and feelings, and dealing with ups and downs, especially on the creative journey, which can be difficult. I also related to needing a lot of time to wind down after events. I don’t like to attend social outings late in the day because I get an adrenaline rush and it takes a lot of time to come down from. I will definitely write down some of these affirmations and start using them. Thank you for sharing!
Suzanne, I'm so glad you love the affirmations. Thanks for sharing a few details from your highly sensitive life. The more we share about being highly sensitive, the more we normalize it. I have a hard time falling asleep at night. I wonder if that might be similar to the adrenaline rush you mentioned after late-evening social outings. It's wise to stay calm in the evenings! Thank you, Suzanne!
I am sitting here with tears in my eyes. I will take the quiz, and click the links to read more, although I already know that this describes me. I do tend to think there is something “wrong “ with me. And I already know that my partner does not understand who I am . Thank you for sharing this article at this time.
Joelle, I'm thrilled this article created an "aha" moment for you. It can be challenging with partners, especially when we don't know high sensitivity and that it's normal for a percentage of the population. There is much information about this topic on the Internet, and support for you is out there! Wishing you the best.
I scored 22 on that Quiz! I will do some reading ; I suspect that I have already adapted many of my behaviors over time to minimize my responses. Sometimes I think I'd do well as a hermit... but not really. I just need to control what, where, who and how much!
OMG, Sandra, I got every one of the answers on the HSP test! Yikes! And I also feel things that others are feeling, cry over animals and children, acts of kindness, you name it, I am a sucker and have to tell myself to buck up and not let how I feel show.
I guess it's not anything I didn't already know but it is sort of amazing to see it written out.
I have spent a lot of my life trying to "toughen up" because that seems necessary to make it through life in a normal way :). Thanks for this eye-opener! <3
Jean, I'm so glad you found this explanation of high sensitivity eye-opening. Once we know high sensitivity is normal for a percentage of the population, we can feel seen and validated. I know what you mean about trying to toughen up. I cry at the drop of a hat! But now that I know all about high sensitivity, I can accept myself more. Sending a big hug!

This is so beautiful, Sandra! I'm just starting to understand my identity as a HSP and will definitely try these affirmations. Thanks for writing :)

Thank you. This was very helpful.
I've never been big on self-cheerleading but I can see where it has its place now.

Exactly! Having clear boundaries and limiting our exposure is a form of self-care. Wishing you the best with this, Joelle!
